Thanks Millie for the idea of the "Why I ship ____" thread.
By the way; this post is edited from my super long post at DH about the physocological aspects of shipping...or something like that. So if this post looks familar, that's why. (I just edited it )
To start off with; I should mention about myself is that I am a ‘good girl’, always have one. I once laughingly commented to my friends that this one annoying kid in my resource kept insisting I was on drugs and everybody was said things like, “You’re the last person to ever do drugs”. I’ve even been called prudish; but that’s a bit off-topic.
The thing is; this reflects into what type of guys I like and what type of relationship I like in Avatar.
This is going to sound SO cliché; but I’m all for opposites IN PERSONALITY (people, please don’t scream at me why I’m wrong and how I’ve got the opposites thing all wrong). I am a ‘good girl’ and the guys I tend to like are bad, are the class clowns, the ones that are the complete opposite of me and who I am.
I look back later (when I like a different guy) and wonder how on Earth I ever liked that one guy.
And you know why? Because he was my opposite, my complete and total opposite in personality. Why am I attracted to guys who are failing? Because I get A’s.
And how does that make sense? I’ll tell you why.
The reason opposites are appealing, and the reason that people (like myself) love opposites is because we have never experienced the opposite of ourself (usually), don’t know what’s its like to “go to the dark side, to be on the dark side”. We don’t know; we’re curious people. We want to find out, and one of the best ways to find out is in a relationship, where we are close to our ‘opposite’ and find out what it’s like to be like that.
And that makes us ‘whole’ as Iroh would put it; because we see both sides of the story, both the negative and positive [of both sides]. When we know and understand that, we become ‘whole’ and wise.
And that is why I believe (and many others believe) that Zutara (and other opposites) would work. Because they want to experience the other side, and need to experience or at least find out/know about the other side to truly know, be whole and be wise.
It’s just like issues of our world; if we don’t see both sides of the issue, how can we truly know the issue? How can we truly pick a side?
The reason I don’t like Kataang is because Katara is needed more as Aang’s close friend and protector than girlfriend right now. It’d be huge stress on both parties and the relationship would consist more of Katara being his mother and his sister than his girlfriend.
To me, Zutara works because Zuko and Katara experience the other side, they experience the other nation’s culture, and overall learn that they aren’t so different after all.
I don’t believe that it would be as much pain to both parties as people say it would be; that’s a little extreme when I think about it. Sure, it’d be hard and it’d take a lot of work, but it would be worth it in the end.
And as they say, “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.”
